How Do You Cool Off Your Chickens? (112 degrees in Southern NM!)

It's freakin hot here. I'm soooooo ready for a nice cloudy rainy day. I put a tarp over the run because we have NO shade trees in my yard. I've planted a few trees, but they're still too small to do any good. I put the mister on one side of the run, and I also put a dog house in the run that I put frozen water bottles and ice packs in. I'm hoping it creates an "air conditioned" room for them to escape to. They don't go in there much, so I threw some scratch in there today to tempt them...LOL. I also put a kitty litter pan in the run with a few inches of water in it. Today I dunked a few of the birds in the cool water...only 2 seemed to like it, the rest flapped their wings and ran away. I bet they were cooler though

Silly birds don't know what's good for 'em...

MAF2008 just said this in another post just below:

Here is a tip that I use and it works GREAT! I have an chicken automatic water fountian and cooloing watering system! This is so easy and I will never have to lug another hose to the coop and clean out the nasty chicken waters with alge! Please try this soon!

You will only need 5 things......

1) a garden hose (you maybe have one)
2) a timer (get at the garden center)
3) a "bubbler waterer sprinkler" (round ring kind by the water hoses)
4) a cinder or concrete block (lots of styles and sizes)
5) a hot water pan (this is a shallow round pan that fits under your hot water heater and you can get in metal or plastic. Its 2 inches deep and 3 feet in circumfrence.

Put the soaker/bubbler on top of the cinder/concrete block screw in the hose. (you may want to add wire to keep it from falling off) Place the hot water pan under the bottom and turn on the hose.

Its that easy. My chickens are the coolest chicks in town!
I let the pan overflow for a few minutes so the chickens can cool thier feet. I am adding some old bath tiles around the base so they will be even cooler on their feet

I wish I could use misters here, but in NW Florida, when it's around 100 degrees, the humidity is so high they don't really help! They just make it MUGGIER!

I built my coop in the shade of a big oak tree.

Hi

from Carlsbad New Mexico. It has been hot.
My husband used 1/2" PVC and mister heads to make a large hanging mister. We have it hanging in a horse loafing shed and it cools my chickens and goats down a lot. For my broodies I freeze gallon size jugs of water and put them in the nest boxes with the broodies and it cools them down too. Silly girls would rather bake in a nesting box to have babies than to be out with the others and be cooler under the mister

I do not and am not making fun of anybody but an ac unit in a chicken coop........ Come on... God made them animals. They live outside. Do they stay in the coop by choice or do they go outside?
Billy

My girls stay in the house by choice when it gets this hot! LOL!!! We have AC and when they hear it click on, they come on in! They like to be outside, but around 11:00 it starts to get hot... so in they trot!

SPOILED you say?? YES !!
P.S. They stay on concrete floor in the basement, and in case you were wondering, I do spend a lot of time keeping my floor poop free... no, we don't live in a poopy house...

We actually have a small fan in our coop. We run the cord along the seam of the coop to a surge protector we have mounted in the coop (they can't get to the surge protector). The birds love it and really cools it down for them.
