How do you count your chickens?

I only have 12 though....

OMG! You count your chickens? Oh no, that would never do. DH would find out how many there really are! Besides, it changes on a daily basis as they hatch.;-)

I count like this:
Do I see-
1 white leghorn?
1 Black Australorp?
3 black silkies?
1 white silkie?
1 phoenix?
1 dutch hen?
1 dutch roo?
1 buff silkie roo?
1 partridge silkie roo?

If i answer yes to all of these questions, my chickens are all here!

its probably easier to count them by grouping them, rather than counting them one by one. they don't exactly sit still.

If they are standing still I count one by one, otherwise I gotta group 'em. My husband frequently shakes his head and asks how many times a person can count to 42 in one day.

I say I need a better more rounded number...maybe bump it up to a good even 50?

I have 6 in one pen, 11 in another and 5 in another, with 3 ducks. I also count at feeding time or treat time, when they tend to pause for a second! Sometimes I have to do it 3-4 times.

DH didn't really get it, until I asked him to count them,

Now he understands.......
