How do you cure "Pasty Butt"?

I have heard others on here mention "pasty butt" and was wondering if there is a cure for this. I lost one of my rhode island red chicks this last hatch from this because i didnt know what to do for it. It seemed to stay really moist and pasty around the butt area and almost seemed like it was getting bound up. any suggestions on what I could do in the future for this?

Most likely the chicks are getting to cold. Make sure that they can stay warm to prevent it. The other main cause is bad feed.

When it does occur use a warm water and clean rag and wipe it all off.

I put my little butts under a warm faucet to wash them off and trimmed their feathers with scissors so the poop wouldn't collect on their bums. After a couple days it stopped. Chicks should be eating chick starter and plenty of water. No treats until a little bit bigger.

Believe it or not, Pasty Butt is a symptom of constipation. The cure is molasses in their drinking water. Molasses is a natural laxative for fowl. Mix it like weak tea and give it to them for 2 days. Naturally you should clean their little butts with a warm damp cloth before you start the treatment. This treatment is for adult birds as well as chicks......Pop

I notice pasty butt on my new chicks also. I took warm water and washed their butts everyday for a few days. after that i just watched and wiped the ones who needed it. It went away after about a week.
I was told to be careful as not to pick the poop off the butts, as you could pull the intestine out. I just soak their butts in the warm water unti it lossened.

Thank you all very much for your replies. I will definitely try the molasses in water if it happens after my next hatch. I believe that the constipation is what killed the little guy. I wish i would have known this sooner. Thanks again!
