How do you do it or what do you recommend?

I have a short fence on one side of my yard and that I share with the neighbor. Chickens like to jump on top of it. One time I chased a bird back over to my side. Usually if I see one on the fence I walk out and light tap it on tail to get it back on ground. Is there something I could put there as a deterrent that wouldn’t stress them out? Maybe a row of Christmas decorations? Or something? I can’t really make the fence bigger.

I second pictures being helpful here.

Is there any way to put a barrier on the inside of the fence? You could attach plastic snow fence or something similar to something like tomato stakes to serve as a taller barrier that they will have a hard time getting over.

I attached a light fence to tall tomato spirals to serve as a temporary barrier and it worked well. I wouldn't recommend the particular fence that I used since it was not as sturdy as I thought it would be, but something like snow fence should be sturdy enough if you're only looking to create a barrier.
