I'm new to chickens and still learning. How the heck do they tell a chicks gender as soon as they hatch. I ask because around here they only sell pullets, well I've found a feed store that sells them straight run but I'm afraid I'll pick the wrong one, lol. I'm looking for a little Roo and can't seem to find any that aren't full grown :-/.

Hatcheries vent sex chicks for the most part. It's a tricky business, so they're not always accurate.
Some crosses are bred to be feather sexed, but that takes specific parent stock for a one time cross.
Then you have your sex links. Sex is linked to color, so they're a no-brainer if you know what you're looking for.

If you're not particular about breed, have you looked on CL or similar? Posted a wanted ad? My CL has several folks this time of year getting rid of those Oops roosters that were incorrectly sexed at the hatchery, they're usually around 2-5 months old.
