How do you feed kitchen scraps?

The wild birds suet feeder is a great idea too, I used one when my pullets were smaller to put their lettuce in. You can hang it a little higher so they have to work a little to get the treats.

If you dont have one you could make something similar if you have a little hardware cloth left over, just shape it to hold things.

I just went to the dollar store and bought huge dog bowls-works for me !!!!!

I have about 35 pullets about ready to start laying, so I have backed off the treats so they will eat the layer crumble. We have 2 lids to some 35 gallon garbage cans. I have a friend who checks the dates on baby food for the food pantry. They cannot use it if it is even one day expired. She asked me if I could feed it to the chickens. They were delighted. I add some baby oatmeal, some malabar spinach, any leftover fruit or veggie from the fridge, some flax seed, some yogurt, and mashed boiled egg with the shell. I mix it and add some BOSS and serve it in the garbage can lids, so everyone can have some. They have a blast, and they look great, so it must not be bad for them. The baby cereal keeps them from runny poop. I try to find healthy things that would normally go to waste and mix it with the baby cereal.

Do you feed them cooked oatmeal or just oats? I have seen many birds have liked oatmeal & I have wondered if its cooked or not.....

Both cooked and raw. Cooked in winter and raw in summer.

I use recycled 3# Smart Balance margarine tubs...take the leftovers out each day (no fruit flies!) and leave the tub for them to clean up. Go out later and retrieve the empty tub which is then washed and is ready to be used again...have 3 of these which works great if I'm cleaning out the frig.

I usually throw stuff off the back deck (they free range the back yard) but I also have a variety of pans for messy stuff, and I've been known to just set a kitchen pan out there for them to clean up too.
