How do you find takers for roosters??

I have the opposite problem...I love eating "home grown" chicken but not many people around here seem to be giving them away. I've already processed my extra roosters this year.

Keep posting and you might get takers... but beware, cause I don't think you want them to cockfight - right. That's a really cruel way to die if you ask me. That was my concern when rehoming mine.

We do have a place few miles away that will "process" your chickens for a fee... that is the way I'd go!

And cats and dogs... that's always what I've heard! Even from Chinese friends of ours!!!!!

I put my EE rooster on Craigslist. He got a great home on a 20 acre farm. The lady was super nice and just looking for a pretty rooster for her small flock of hens. It's worth a try!

My husband and I joke about this one Chinese restruant across the street from a duck pond. We have seen ducks crossing the street in one direction only.

I have a question about how young you can give them away. I expect to get some packing peanuts with my order next week. I'd rather not have to feed them and clean up there poop longer than I have to.

I understand the dilemma. I have several roosters from this spring's hatches that I can't keep. A few have gone to pet homes (2 of them went to live out their lives as "historic interpreters" at a local historic site where they re-enact colonial times) and a couple more are waiting for a new home with a member of this board, but other than that....no luck! I also have flyers up.

I'm also a vegetarian, but before I decided to breed chickens I made the decision that I would be fine with my extra roosters going to off to be someone's dinner. After all, they lived a much better life with me than they would have in a factory farm somewhere--so I'm cool with it. We also thought about having them processed and feeding them to our dogs, but I don't think that the processing fee would make that worth it financially (I think it's somewhere around $2 a bird).

Craigslist has a good reputation. FreeCycle used to be good, 'til they got full of themselves with rules. They now have more 'dont's' than an airline checkpoint - one of which is no animal giveaways.

You might try learning a little Spanish and post an ad in the area free shopper, etc.....

GRATIS: Gallos/gallinos en ( - - your area - - ). Venga y ellos recoger. Llama ( - - your name - - ) a ( - - phone number - - ). Por Favor, no hablo Espanol.

"FREE: Roosters/cockerels in (your area). Come and pick them up. Call (you) at (number).
Please, I don't speak Spanish."

Works like a charm. When they call, they know you need them to speak in English, right away. 'Makes things easier.
This one is also along the lines of the Chinese suggestion earlier. If you're sensitive or prone to worry about their welfare, don't do it.
