How do you get ready for winter?

If you have questionable eggs, then just boil them and fed them back to your chickens. Crush shells and all. Good protein,,,,, back to chickens. :thumbsup
I have done it this way. Times I found a clutch of eggs that a hen has been secretly trying to hatch. I gather all and cook and serve back to them.

I get ready for winter by insulating my coop, using prima heat lamps (2), heated waterer, windbreaks in my coop, and keeping the coop openings (doors, windows, ventilation hatch) closed as much as possible.
Winter with chickens ina terrible time for me because my rooster has a huge comb and he has to be in a crate in the coop where it’s warm and if he’s In the crate he can’t protect the hens from predators. Winter here is frustrating!

Who gave you that advice???????

Oh no, @Abriana! Why don't you spread some Vaseline on your roosters comb and wattles? That will help a lot with his large comb.
I did, I would do all of the chickens combs, but when it gets below thirty two and there is water on his wattles, then he gets it. I put vitamin E oil on it to help with healing.

Great job! You take a lot of the steps that I take while getting ready for the cold Winter :)

Aww, poor thing :( I have a rooster with a very large comb, and every night he snuggles between two hens and buries his head in their feathers :love

Awww! Napoleon, my rooster, has to sleep in a crate when the heat lamp is on because the hens get bored and peck at him. Poor guy, he has a hard life!
