How do you get rid of rats?

These pesky little things have started to kill my budgies, I'll be moving the budgies, I know how to protect them, but how can I prevent the rats from entering into their room in the first place? Is there a smell they dont like or something like that?

1. Make sure all food is closed and its SPOTLESS so they have nothing to eat. And I’m airtight rat proof containers. The big ones with the twist tops

keep their area super clean, so no poop (or as little as
possible, and make sure they aren’t going for your budgies

I am rural and some of the neighbors have various livestock, cattle nest to us. I tried about everything when one of my coops was infested but I have a lot of coops and birds, (some of the coops are my avatar). I finally resorted to using poison. I put the poison in rat bait stations and the bait stations in a pet carrier so nothing but the rats could get to the bait and put the pet carries on shelves in the barn which is behind the coops. There were tunnels around the coops and barn and since I didn't find any dead rats I assume they went into their tunnels and died. Good luck...
