How do you get rust out of feeders?

I'm rebuilding a bunch of brooders that I picked up from a feed store, they've been stored outside for 10 years. First one I've worked on runs like a champ. I rewired the whole thing and it's running just great. The waver in the thermostat even still works.

I just need to know how to clean up the feeders and get the rust out of them.

Any ideas?

Try steel wool

Naval jelly might be an idea.

Get what you can off with steel wool or a wire brush. If its lots of rust and an easy area to get to a wire brush on a drill would be the way to go. Once you get all the rust you can off spray the affected areas with rust convertor. Ospho and The Right Stuff are good rust convertors. The right stuff is the generic that works just as well but cheaper. It can be bought in auto parts stores in the paint section. It will leave some white powder behind brush or wipe it off a couple days after application.

Cool, thanks. Will that stuff be a problem for the chickens? Will just soap and water get it cleaned off enough?
