I'm building my coop. I am planning on having an opening on the side for the chicks to go in and out of the coop. I was planning on it being about a foot square. I keep reading about this deep litter method and I'm curious how the litter stays in the coop. I would think the birds would scratch it out the door. Perhaps the door cant be level with the bottom of the coop?

Yeah, cut the door about 6-8 inches above the floor.

Exactly. I cut the bottoms of the pop door openings 8" up from the bottom of the coop. With 6" of litter or so you won't have any problems with them dragging litter out that way.
