How do you keep yourself down to earth??

The whole reason I am starting this hobby farm thing is to add a little gravity into my life

The internet is referred to as a cloud, and I figured it was time to get my head out of the clouds

I prayed about this, and the answer I got was "raise chickens and grow a garden"

This kind of activity is a "back to basics, simplistic" one, and that is what I needed

You could say that this hobby is therapeutic

It is VERY theraputic. You should see me speeding home from work (Lafayette) rushing to get home to get out of my work clothes into my old rags and boots and get into that yard and enjoy all of my animals. If someone drived by my house and saw me talking to my animals, they would think I was crazy. I get in that chicken yard and I start talking to them asking them what did I miss in the barn yard that day, who was doing what, who got in trouble, who was figthing, etc. The turkey gobbles back and rats on everyone. He tells me all the details.

My husband was listening to the radio at work and said there was a segment on money saving. He said it was the most useless stupid information ever and none of it applied to us because we weren't image-obsessed technofreaks. Which is hysterical considering I own two petticoats and have a serial port tattooed to my neck, but I digress...

They were giving advice like don't buy takeaway because it can add up (we NEVER buy takeaway, we think it's kinda gross and expensive)

Then they had people call in to ask them if they had no money, what could they NOT live without? ....Foxtel (Cable TV), Internet, Iphones... and the first thing I said to my husband was, "Duh, food. But I'd probably stock up on seeds first." Foxtel would be the FIRST to go (yeah we have it, but dude, it's STUFF).

We have iPhones, we have fancy shoes, we have nice things and like nice things, we work very very hard and money is a big motivator for the both of us - we're very work driven people... but in the end we're both smart enough to know it's JUST STUFF. JUST MONEY. Yeah we work our little hearts out for it 6 days a week usually, but we're not so glued to our little electric lives that we NEED it. We have it because we like and enjoy it from the fruits of our labours. I grew up very very poor so becoming middle class (I still think it's upper, but society says middle. I don't care, I can afford FOOD, that seems rich to me) is a whole big huge deal for me.

But we both know, he grew up on a farm, I grew up in the slums... we both made what we have in less than 10 years. We can do it again. Nothing more than a bit of hard work, some tenacity and honesty... get you places.

Having baby chicks in the house is another great way of keeping me grounded. I mean they are always crying for something I can't leave cause I'm grounded by the chicks.

Being a caregiver to my 92 year old mom with dementia......mom always wanted things and never seemed to have enough or be happy...but now all that matters to her is whether we spend time together, if I fix her favorite meal, cut out fabric squares for her to sew, bake her cookies or pie or go somewhere because she doesn't remember much else....lesson for me: Enjoy each day that you are given while you have it; take time to smell the roses (or chicken poo!) or whatever; watch the geese fly by, call your kids, send the little boxes full of goodies even if they are in their 30's and have everything..it makes them smile and think of you....pray, thank God; when your done pray again; bow your head and thank God for the food you eat, the ability to grow, harvest and enjoy it; for holding your hubby's hand after each and every meal and talking....its the little things..not the stuff that matter in this short life that we are given. Blessings to all of you!!!
