you need to be more specific...

a Splash bird is "Usually" a black bird with two copies of the blue gene(Bl/Bl)
a Blue bird is "Usually" a black bird with one copy of the blue gene(Bl/bl+)
a black bird is "Usually" a black bird with no copies of the blue gene(bl+/bl+)

i mean,if you get a "blue cochin"there's like a 20% chance it will be splash,not solid blue

Here is a great photo of a batch of Blue-Splash-Black chicks, probably from a mating of blue on blue based on the apparent color ratios. So I would say it should be pretty obvious.

If the chicks are all gray, the hatchery or breeder probably had a splash rooster over all black hens or vice-versa.
