How do you know who laid what?

Back to the question. I keep a chart in thep coop. I have the name of all the hens on it. I've trained them to check off their names and what nest they used when they lay. So far it's working pretty well.

But Guertrude, the she can't fool me. I know her green one. Actually I pretty much know what each hens egg look like.

Well, they did like to eat the pine garland on the front of the house, so maybe that's what did it.

Speaking of food coloring, I've read about a Silkie breeder who used to place three or four drops of food coloring in her hens' vents and then some of it would smear onto the egg when they'd lay. It helped her know which of her hens in her small pen were laying and identify which chick came from which momma after hatch. The trick is getting the food coloring IN the vent and not all over the hen and then your clothes!

Seems like it would work unless they did a bunch of pooping before dropping the next egg. I just don't see how you'd do it without ending up slathered in all colors of the rainbow.
