How do you make your chickens more comfortable with you?

I found the best way to take my teenage chicks was to take them off the perch and hold them then put them back on when you are done. After less then a week doing that 6 out of 10 got to the point I can pet them and put of those 6, 2 of them I can pick right up with no warning and they don't ever flinch.

I use names whenever I talk to any of my 6 girls. This has happened before... Yesterday I came into the yard and 5 hens were tossing up the compost pile. The sixth was nowhere to be seen. I asked, like you'd ask a dog or a child... "Where's Nellie?" a couple times. Moments later, Florence, followed quickly by Dot, hopped out of the compost bin and chicken trotted off towards a far corner where Nellie was emerging from some brush!

I am convinced they know their names AND the names of their flockmates.

the more they see you and get treats from you the more comfortable they get...some breeds more than others.
But I was several times surprised how suddenly a girl jumps on my lap or simply lets you pet her...let them make the first move...:)
good luck....

As someone already said go in there after dark. They are more docile then. Pick them up, pet, and talk to them. During the day get one and bring them into a corner of the pen. This works good for a rooster thats acting up as well. They feel like they can't escape and remain still. I have two barnevelder that are extremely flighty that im working with. The rest of my crew won't get out from under my feet or quit jumping on my shoulder.

When I go out and visit the chicks and talk to them, my big girls hear me and come running! I always have treats, so the little ones are learning that when I come to visit, there is usually something good to eat!
