I would email the rescues in your area, ask THEM to come give you a homecheck/vet check, get their approval and send it to THAT rescue!! I just looked on Petfinder and there are a few in our area that need homes, and i am not far at all from NC. There is one adult female that is just gorgeous!!!! She is at a small dog rescue in Pearisburg VA

You know that may be a good idea. I adopted 3 kitties from a local shelter in March. They knew me from coming and going with Spook at the local Petsmart and didn't do a home check. If they came now they would find a messy house (fabric in the process of being washed, ironed and sorted all over the house) The floor covered with kitty toys. Full food and water bowls (had to get those auto filling things cuz 5 cats eat a lot of food!!) The newbies have gained and average of 4 lbs each. Lucky more but he is also more muscluar from running from one end of the house to the other all day long. Lucy has had surgery to remove her eye but that was better than hurting her everytime we tried to clean the green gunk out of it. Our 13year old FatBeast has come out of hiding during the day and now lies in the living room with the 3 1year olds running all around and over him!
I really don't want to get a dog much older than about 9 months. There is a special bond that I need to build with them at an early age if they are going to be the kind of Service Dog I need. And I know I want a girl puppy. I could spend a $100 and go up to Banner Elk and buy some of the cutest ACD puppies, but I want one from a rescue. I want to help one, maybe 2 get out of the shelter and into a home that will love them. Spook was a rescue as is everybody but Butterscotch. Her mom was a rescue that I didn't get fixed fast enough!!
Hello Katie!!! We have found a puppy and she will be with us this weekend!!
Little Cattledog girl, will turn 6months on Aug1st. She looks a lot like my Spook, except she has a tail!!! I'll try to post pictures here in a minute. They aren't good. Tina said they were taken with her cell and Katie wouldn't hold still long enough to get a shot! She has been around cats with no problems. Cattle Dog prey drive, you gotta find them somethingelse to chase. Miss Ginny her foster mom said she is a sweetie, not going to be a large Cattle dog, Active, SMART, and "stone-cold deaf". I'm reading up on hand signals now!!
Trying to get ahold of the transport person who offered to help get Lady Blue to me to see if she can help with Katie this weekend. Anyone between Fayetteville, Ark and Nashville want to help??!!

LOL when Lurchie heard her name he got pale. Katie was his grandmothers name. Lurchie feels she is the only one who ever loved him until me and the fur babies came along. Long story--adopted short--black sheep. Grandma loved her big baby boy. Grandma teamed up with Spook to haul this little one in.
After all the jumping though hoops for people for the last 3 weeks, all it took was me calling and talking to the foster mom. She told the rescue director that we were the people for Katie. She was bound for transport to Chicago on Monday the place That wouldn't adopt me the last 2 puppies!! She was pulled last night
Ready for this, the cost of her adoption..................$20 to cover the cost of her rabies tag.
