How do you move a broody?

I have a hen who has gone broody and taken to the eaves up in the top of the coop. She is only a few days into it so I'm not sure if she will stick out the 21. I don't see how a chick could get down from there without getting hurt. Can I move her or will it break her broodiness? Do I leave her and just keep a close watch?

You can try moving her, its best to do it in the dark at night

u can move her i move mine to what i call the "baby coop" so i know when the chicks hatch she can take care of them with out the other hens messing with them and if she wants to take them out for walks they can get in and out easy unlike our nesting boxes just for eggs

I TRIED to break a broody and it didn't work! She brooded thru whatever I did to her. I finally moved her into a broody coop/chicken tractor with her own nest box. There she sat faithfully on 4 plastic eggs until 3 weeks was up, then I got her some chicks and gave them to her at night. But you're right - if she hatches eggs up in the air, the chicks will fall out to their deaths. You'll have to move her. Hope it works for you the way you want it to. You're in charge!

I moved my broody when it was closer to the hatching time. I put her in a rabbit cage on the floor of the coop with the door open for her to come and go as she pleased (which seemed like never) and I also put in a small waterer and food container for her too. I did it during the day time and she was just fine. She's a very protective mother and broody so no one messed with her! ( She is broody again this week, her last hatch was in March!! Wish us luck!) Good luck to you with your hen, I'm sure you won't break her broodiness but keep an eye on her when you move her just to make sure she doesn't go back to her other spot.

When she's sitting good (at least 2 nights) move her at night to the spot you want her with as little light as possible. (if possible, move the nest with her) Give her a fake egg to sit on, to make sure she's going to accept being moved. Then when she's sitting good in the new spot, you can slip the eggs you want her to hatch under her and remove the fake one.
