How Do You............(question about multiple breeds) & BANTAMS

Heather, This is the photo of the beginning. We started with a large playhouse from Lowes and built the run outside and then we have the silkie baby house next to be followed by another like the silkie only larger

I am putting tags from all of our states on the first house and using chicken feed and egg signs on the 2nd.

The runs connect together at the front of the Silkie lot and back of the Cochin, Polish lot.

We decided to slant the top back because it was less expensive and the snow will slide off better. The bottom of the silkie Lot was a huge shipping crate and we just put posts under it and added on to the top and put 90 year old windows that open wide for ventilation. We used old tin we had so there is very little expense except for the hard ware cloth which is all we will use because of predators. You can see the sand pit underneath the bottom of the pen and on the side is a small ladder they walk up an down. I keep all feed inside and the nest boxes will go to the outside. We have a door that opens with a rope and pulley so we don't have to go inside to let them in and out. It is very easy! The sides of the fence lots came form Lowes and is given to us. It is the holder for lattice board and they throw it away. It is the perfect size!

I hope this helps you some!

this is what i was thinking of doing too. i have multiple breeds but was only going to do salmon faverolle as pure by only owning one roo and that would have been a salmon faverolle. eggs are a different color then the others so it would be easier to pick out the eggs from the rest.

I'll probably try that...but then the other hens wouldn't be producing purebred eggs and I'd be feeding them for nothing....

I am planning on a dark egg and a blue egg project... still thinking of a good name

Planning on having a Marans roo with Marans hens, a Welsummer and some other brown egg layers.

Then I will have a a nice Araucana or maybe Ameracana roo with blue egg laying hens and some misc hens.

Those will be in a large coop split down the middle with a split run.

Then I have plans to build a 3 sectioned coop/run.... one for my Silkie and his girls, one for my Frizzle and his girls and the other for some Seramas. I'm sure at some point I will aquire some misc. bantams which will just get thrown in the mix in one coop or the other.

I like having chickens to have them. I'm curious about mutts, or "Designer Breeds"

hehe So I don't mind a few mixed ones here and there.... puts some fun into it

But I will still be able to determine which hens are laying TRUE.

I am leaning towards one of those Starplate buildings & trying to create a pinwheel of runs (small runs) and using it was a bantam palace, LOL If that makes sense? I've yet to see the inside of a finished coop which is a starplate kind...so we'll see...if that will work...hubby will probably pass out when I bring that proposal to him, LOL

I was planning on a starplate as well...... until we got this killer deal on a shed

My plans just will not stop changing! LOL My DH happened across my "sketch" of my poultry palace last night...

As far as I know there's no supports or anything inside of them... at least as I can tell from what I've seen online... so you could divide it however you wanted. Originally I was planning something similar as well. I was going to have it so you could walk into it and into the center.... with the rest being sectioned off into like say, 4 areas, with doors within their areas, leading into seperate parts of the run which would pretty much run around most of the outside of it... like a big half circle, I guess. Hard to describe... but I think I know what you mean

I lay awake at night thinking of coops. It's a sad sad thing....
