LOL.. Ive tried Sarah, just cant do it. I think its the heaviness. Most northerners (Disclaimer...MOST...lol) dont eat big breakfasts. Probably cause we/they dont sit still long enough.

Ive always been a 'bagel on the run' kind of gal. Biscuits and gravy just dont eat well on the Interstate.

If you think McD's was annoyed over the coffee law suit, wait til you hear about the hot gravy one...

Breakfast is not first thing you do here. You get up an work a while an then you eat breakfast after you are up an hour or two. Its really morning break. Thats why its called breakfast. If I try to eat first thing now I get sick.

Southern food is not ordered. If you are in a restaurant that you have to order it wont be true southern food. True southern food in only in restaurants that put everything in front of you an you mix an match.

To make squaw corn- you make a lb of bacon (or turkey bacon, canadian, whatever) crumble it up, mix up a dozen or so eggs & milk or cream (like scrambled eggs) throw in a can of corn, mix together and cook like scrambled eggs.
The corn makes it sweet & crunchy, the bacon makes it salty.....Goes really good with big fluffy biscuits, or even toast. I cannot make a big enough pan of it.

There might be another name for it- but that's how I've always known it.

The lady with the coffee was old enough to know better too...in her sixties. How do you get to sixty and not know that putting hot coffee, in a styrafoam cup, near your privates is a bad idea?

I live in the south now, and after 15 years I still can't do biscuits and gravy. Biscuits with butter and honey on the other hand...I'm there!!!!

Englishchick, if you make the biscuits, look for a soft or low protein flour. Good biscuits don't like gluten. They are very like a scone, but the best ones are a flacky, melt in your mouth delight.

I grew up saying crick for creek, pop for carbonated beverages, and hi instead of hello or hey. Here in Texas, many folks say "hey". I also grew up with a large number of country sorts of sayings....

I don't know him from Adam's off ox

my mom's call to dinner...Come and get it or I'll throw it in the crick"

She'll take after a bear with a switch

It's a horse a peice....taking about things being the same distance apart.

Slicker than goose poop

and an Alaskan favorite, not heard anywhere else but universally understood in most parts of Alaska....he lives "out the road" or I'm going "out the road"

We're Hoosiers. We don't call it southern cooking, just homestyle.

Have you ever tried biscuits with butter and molasses? Take a hunk of softened butter and pour some molasses over it, mix is all together and sop it up with hot biscuits.
