Can you sex black copper marans chicks?

I was told that if you look at the chick's head from the side on pullets you will see little or no comb and on the roosters it will stick up a bit. I did not really keep track of that so cant say for sure. I waited for them to feather out. I did not have enough confidence in the method to cull before I could see from feathering so didnt seem to make sense to pay a lot of attention.

Someone with more record keeping interest could try and see if it works. I know that in the long run the ration worked out, but It most likely would in any case.

You have to wait for the comb to grow. Even with that I still had 1 fool me.

Here's an old thread of mine. The first pic turned out to be a girl, the 2nd a boy and the 3rd a girl. (the one that fooled me with comb growth)

Some have more white than others, does that mean it's a rooster or hen?

i had one fool me too. She had pink thick legs, big feet, a fair size comb, and she would bump chests with the males and act like a roo. She was slow to feather out as well. Thought she was gonna be a roo for sure but she is a sweet girl.

You may also be able to sex the chicks by leg/foot color. The darker tend to be female, the lighter male. There are some good pics of how to sex black copper chicks in the Marans breed thread - but I'm not sure where in the 640 pages!
