OMG!!!!! I am soooo mad. I went to check the nests for eggs and my silkie roo was in the nest box. i didn't think anything of it and went to grab the egg and the dang rooster bit it and started eating the egg shell and all. I now have him locked up in a dog kennel because i don't know what to do. I cant allow him to stay in the coop if he is gonna eat the eggs but i don't want to let him freerange for fear of him being killed. Is there any way to stop him from eating the eggs?

well i went in my coop a few nights ago like late at night and my rooster was on bottom like he was incubating and egg, and the hen was on top idk if he really was incubating an egg or not but i thought nothing of it where was your rooster?? was he on the nest too??? should i be concerned??

You could try putting a few golf balls or plastic eggs in his dog kennel. Eventually he might give up on trying to break them open.... that's what I would do. Hasn't happened to me yet as I don't even get eggs yet...but you can try!

1sttimer:

My egg eating roo was in the nest box when i went to collect the eggs and he will run hens off a nest. The hens like to just sit there at times and i have seen him run them off before but didn't know why he was doing it. Now I know. I have never heard of one incubating eggs but i do know that they will just sit in a nest box. so i can't really say that your roo will eat the eggs. guess it's a trial and error type of thing, I would advise you to keep a close eye on him though.

We the same problem with our favorite chicken, Snow White. We really don't want to give her up and she's just been eating them up. Right now she's separated and really need some more ideas. we will try the golf ball idea.

Try the golf balls, ping/pong balls, stone or wood eggs. Collect the eggs as often as possible. Some people have reported success with blowing out eggs and filling them with hot mustard, horseradish, or liquid soap. I broke mine by rearranging the coop to shake things up and adding 5 gallons buckets as nests. Try to keep the nests dim it's harder for the chickens to see the eggs. Some people put curtains in front of the nests. Also as a last resort you may want to consider roll away nests.

Good luck,

ETS- It also could be a protein deficiency, in the diet; try feeding more protein i.e. dairy, meats, catfood etc.
