How do you stop predators from digging under?

If rodents are prolific, burying the apron ~12" would be good.

How wide are the bales? Theory is that they wont dig as far to get under the coop?

Checked last night, they are about 18" wide.

I have 1/2" hardware cloth apron around the whole coop and run, about 18 - 24 inches out. It's been down for 3 years, no signs of rust or degrading. The front and sides are covered with mulch and the back is in the woods. I've had raccoons try to dig along the fence, no problems with them getting in or ripping the wire.

I put an apron of chicken wire with heavy rocks on top. The rocks are a feature of this property, no cost there. Now there is a covering of dirt and you can not tell (in places) that there is wire under there. Nothing can dig in and nothing can dig out either! I also placed hardware cloth up two feet on the outside walls so racoons cannot reach their nasty hands through and grab a chick and kill it.

Yes it is, but not everyone has power to their coops!
