How do you store your poultry feed?

I have been using plastic totes for four years now and have yet seen any damage. I have no cats. When we did they kept coming up to the house and living in the garage. When we bought this farm 23 yes ago we had a massive feral cat problem. Could not get anyone to help with them so we had to take matters in our own hands. The first summer we killed almost 200 of them. We raised sheep and the cats would kill the lambs or eat their ears and tales off. The cats we diseased and very sick. Each year we killed half from the previous year. We seem to be a drop off site for unwanted animals. We have always tried to find new homes for them. When we couldn't we kept them.

Whoa...200 cats isn't even an amount I can imagine!

We new we had a major problem when we started finding them dead and half eaten. We called our local animal shelter but they wanted to charge per cat for removal. We then contacted the DNR but they don't handle domesticated animals. We tried our best but was left with no choice. Our family is major animal nuts. We all have had many cats so it was hard to separate our fealings to kill them. It took a long time to eraticate many of the diseases from our farm. I would vaccinate them only to find them dead. We sent a few of the dead o es to the state testing lab. We had feline luckemia, tetanus, distemper and leptospirous's. We had to go cat free for two years to stop the infection. I lost a house cat that escaped to the great outdoors and got a few of the diseases.

I too store my feed outside next to the coop door. A 40# bag fits into the heavy plastic garbage cans and the lids are very snug. Have had no problem for years. Scratch is also in one of the heavy garbage cans. We have plenty of raccoons around, but the feed has been untouched. BTW - I only have 23 chickens, so feed lasts pretty long time.

never have had ants in it either? Here I'm afraid I'd be fighting ants!

Metal Garbage cans in the Garage up on wood blocks so the saltwater from the roads dripping off the vehicles doesn't rust the bottoms. Gotta be in the garage because of bears/raccoons, etc. in the spring, summer, fall months. Metal because of the sneaky mice and chippies that sneak in the garage when it is open.

and here I am worried about ANTS and you have BEARS? omgosh!

just had a small refrigerator go bad set it on its back and put a lock on and can get 100 pound in it easy.

We store the feed in the house for now. We are still buying in 50 lb bags and go through one bag a week, so it is workable. When we start buying in bulk, a ton at a time, we'll probably use metal trashcans similar to the ones we use to store the pig feed. Haven't had an issue with those so far.

i have a pupose built hopper in my garage an this takes 4 bags of 20kg amounts easy. lasts for ages
