How do you tell if chickens are hens or roosters when they are older?

If the chicken has spurs on their legs are they roosters? We got some chickens second hand and some of them have spurs, the women said they were all hens. We never hear them crow. Is there some breeds of hens that have spurs? This is our second year of raising chi8ckens, we have twenty birds they are pets plus we are selling eggs to close friends.

It is possible for hens to have spurs. Other signs of roosterhood besides crowing and no eggs include longer pointy saddle and hackle feathers, bigger combs and wattles, but that is among the same breed. You could also post some pictures and folks here could help you out.

First of all,

from the coast of California. You might want to post your question on the forum under Breeds and Gender. Go the Index (in blue bar) then to Breeds and Gender. Someone there should be able to help you. Good luck!
