How do you tell your chickens apart?

When I had slikies I used to dye them many colours. Its not at all cruel. The birds could not care less. I used to bath them anyway for shows, and one day I decided to add some vegetable dye to the water. I had a red one too, and she was not pecked at. Maybe I was lucky. I had a red, blue, pink, green and a yellow one with a blue head. They looked very funny The pink one was my fav, she looked like candy floss.

I like to use these fancy leather ID bracelets, which you can buy online at www.featherware.etsy.com. There are several different colors of leather to choose from, and you can have either your chicken's name printed on the outside or your phone number - great if you want to make sure someone can return your lost chicken should it wander from your backyard!

Hope that helps!

I got a couple of about 5 different breeds just for this reason! lmao I thought I would never be able to tell them all apart. I have 2 barreds, 2 black australorps, 1 buff orp, 1 armericana, and 4 RIRs. The RIRs are all very different sizes (for now), so that helps me tell them apart. One has missing tail feathers and a very different personality -- her name is "Lightning" for a reason! Feather development and coloring are slightly different also (darker/lighter shades of red).

I also use their beak markings to tell them apart.. one of my barreds is white beak, the other is black beak. Also by spending lots of time with them (heh) you start to pick up on personality traits too :) Good luck!

And this is precisely why we get our Isa browns in very distinct shades and markings, as well as mixing in different breeds. Generally, though, you can tell via their personalities.
