How do you tell your geese apart....sex wise?

I have done fully feathered juveniles just to double check them. You just have to be use to handling the birds and not be a wuss. I personally feel that if you chose to own an animal, then you should be well versed in their care, and handling. This includes some home medical treatment, vent sexing, ect.

We have neighbors around here who never go outside, never do anything for themselves. They pay painters, bug sprayers, lawn care people, handymen, pool people. Absolutely everything that happens outside they pay someone else to do it. It is a sad that so many today won't do for themselves and would rather pay another to do even the most simple of task.

I would rather do for myself, and help others learn how to do for the, mselfes too.

Kevin565 how do you behavior sex? What behaviors do you look for? Like gander standing tall or walking between a female and you? From an early age when I would pick up my geese and put them in a tote to take them outside our little gander always lays his head over the other two. Is that something that you are talking about or maybe just an oddity of Boris?

Thanks

I dont think its being a wuss to not know how to vent sex. I have read that the older they get the harder it is and a person new to vent sexing can cause harm due to the tighter muscles/ligaments. I am well versed in animal care just new to geese. My geese are 8 weeks old and pretty large. I bought them as girls and I hope they are indeed girls but it would be nice to know 100% with my own eyes. Would you consider them to still be juveniles?

Yes, they won't lay until next year (spring) so they are just kids now. If you bought them from a hatchery you odds are high they are both girls. If you bought them from an experienced breeder who vent sexes often you should still be ok.

I try and triple check gender before sending them off to their new owners. I also band them and tell the owners which are which and encourage the, to try and vent sex them too. This way they know which is the male and that they should see something. It helps having the first time being on a known gender.

You need a home medical kit to vent sex??? I vent sex my ducklings as day olds, and don't use one...

It is sad I think to. But sometimes its needed...
