You guys are all sooo lucky! We have seven new peeps and one of them was just standing still and being a little wobbly. My son brought it in the house to show me and said, this one is probably going to die. Poor little thing just peeped so pitifully and sat quiet with its eyes closed in my hand.

THEN I noticed tiny, tiny mites crawling all over my hand! Yeah!

I thought the same thing that's going through your heads. We are all spraying ourselves now with it. They're in our hair, arms, back of our ears, etc.

Do mites fly?

So, I'd like to ask you all for a favor. (Yes, please pray for my birds, because we NEED them. This is not a hobby!)

WHAT TO DO:

Firstly, we have NO pet stores or feed stores around here. That's why you guys are so lucky. God help you if you lose them. Kindly look at the contents of Scalex, Sevin and poultry dust. Tell me what's in there. Maybe we can get the inert ingredients from a chemist shop (drug store).

Question: Is DE diatomaceous earth? As I read your posts it seems some of you are using DE for Seven or some other kind of powder. I have no idea where to get any of that. There is nothing like that at all. Apparently, we have inherited the mites from local grass we cut and try to use as a mulch. We simply cannot afford the rice husk which is available somewhere. We have a small bottle of bleach that we dilute four ml per liter of water and spray all around the hutch. We spray the birds (free ranging) only at night when we can get to them.

Now, we're going to spray them twice a day, and not lightly. We'll have to see that they're a little wet under the wings, etc.

We will have to spray roo and the other four youngsters we have left out of eleven who died from a variety of reasons.

I'm beside myself as we have got to lick this very, very quickly.

Does one HAVE to use mulch in the hutch? We keep the hutch sprayed and as clean as we can, but we had no idea the grass was the problem until this morning. WHAT a mess!

I appreciate all the help you can give keeping in mind we're in the jungle and feed and pet stores are not a consideration.

Thanks,

Sky~

Can someone tell me what mites actually do to a bird? Do they get inside? Can they crawl into our ears?

I've got the itches everywhere. I'm spraying myself some more, but it could just be psychological. (I hope!)

Sky~

Skyrider,
Don't know if this really works, but read here yesterday that you can use wood ashes to dust the birds, and put the ash in their dustbathing area. Hopefully someone here with more knowledge can clarify.
Good Luck,
Russ

Oh I'm so sorry - can't help you with alot of your questions, but the active ingredient in Sevin is Carbaryl. The label says"Carbaryl is an N-methyl carbamate insecticide which is a cholinesterase inhibitor." I don't think mites fly or jump; just crawl. I think they suck blood like lice and cause external itching and irritation but can transmit disease.

I wish you the best -
