How do you winterize your coop?

Thanks for responses. Things are still up in the air with them but some of your responses have given me alot of hope that when my mom and I get chickens next year I won't be facing alot of unknown issues.

As for things up in the air. The weather is staying in the 50-60F range during the day occasional drops to 30F at night. But snow hasn't stuck around yet. My sister in law is currently in the plans of getting a new shed to turn into an actual coop house. I guess she decided not to finish the actual coop part? I dunno.. But their letting their chickens/ducks out more during the days which im relieved to see. The ducks are really cute when they wiggle their tails. I honestly don't know why their doing that but its still really cute. Anyways I'm hoping she gets the shed soon because usually sometime around thanksgiving we usually get the first snowfall that sticks around for a week or so.

But everything I've learned on here made me get unlazy and do a 3 page research paper on chickens for my mother cause shes working on saving money for our own coop next year. Her plan is a cement foundation with a metal shed onto it on the right side of our house where we have this steeper than wanted hill. My mom HATES cutting grass on that side cause shes afraid the mower will tip. My dad always ends up cutting that side with no problem. She wants to use my second eldest brothers old dog kennel that has holes in the wire and cover up the holes and use that as a run but she wants to free range them. (I'll most definately end up doing 98% of the chicken care). Anyways plastic wire over the top to keep predator birds out. I'll let her know about heavy duty tarps and zip ties.

The only issue I see with the location of our coop we live up on a hill and the front of our house faces the west over a valley like area so theres usually a large snow buildup on that west side. Usually almost 2 feet deep up against our walk out basement door on that side. So that side of the kennel/run will need tarped over atleast to prevent that. I've pretty much done research about everything else. The last thing to do is finding chicken breeds thatll work for us. My sister in law has easter eggers and black sex link's but I think we should go for some other cold weather breeds. I just have to do that research.
