You can spend a lifetime breeding a good line but really just establishing your own line doesn't take much. That doesn't mean they are quality birds. There are notoriously bad lines in every species of captive bred animal just like their are well known good lines. To claim something as a new breed requires a bit more effort toward making it unique. Otherwise instead of a breed you just have a new line of an existing breed or your own line of barnyard mutts. Getting a new breed fully recognized can extend well beyond your own lifetime in some cases.
