How does oatmeal help chickens stay warm?

X2 on the never cooked for them, except scrambling a bunch of excess eggs now and then. Hmmm, that's what I can do with that box of rolled oats in the pantry. They do get a treat plate every day, mostly scraps and leftovers. I do buy BOSS, and even have a carton of yogurt for them at present, because I wormed them not long ago.

Mine must be really really spoiled, we have been having a 'cold snap' and they live in a shaded area, great when it is 100, but not so great now, I've been using a heat lamp just to keep their water from freezing, even during the days.
anyway, my sister & I eat oatmeal a LOT, so now we just fix more, and whatever we don't finishe of ours goes in theirs, rasins, apples, sunflower kernels, they see us coming and do a hurry hurry hurry dance! Put the bowl down and stand back.

That is an old wives tale. Eat something hot to make you warm, eat something cold and your body has to use more calories to heat said cold food up.

If it's an old wives' tale I've never heard it. Your reasoning does not make sense to me, but I'm signing off this topic because I don't want to argue; people will decide for themselves anyway.

I don't cook it just for my girls, but I make oatmeal porridge for myself most mornings, and somehow

there is always a lot left. I throw some red pepper in it and take it out to the girls...they love it.

Why don't you raise your own mealworms? I have two going now. You'll never have to buy mealworms again!

In the winter, I often cook my chickens something warm in the evening, just before they go to roost. Oatmeal, scrambled eggs, ground corn mixed with warm yogurt.
It may not be true, but I figure something warm in the crops before going to bed will keep them cozy, at least for a little while.

About 30 minutes ago I gave my Chickens some hot oatmeal and mixed in some red pepper flakes, some shredded cheese, some layer crumbles, and some cracked corn. They loved it!!!!!

Is there something that I don't know about red pepper and chickens? A few posted saying that they mix it in treats and snacks for their chicks.

Call it an old wives tale, but for me an ice cold drink warms me up instantly, to the point I break into a sweat. My wife used to say I was strange in that regard. I cannot disagree with her conclusion, but it works for me.
