Just by understanding that it WILL eventually happen .... I just had to accept losses as a fact of raising your own animals...

It's a part of having chickens, or any animal for that matter. Not every chick you buy or hatch out is going to live. Adult chickens also can die for a variety of reasons. It's just the way it is. You either have to learn to deal with it or not have them.

You learn as much as you can ahead of time about what to do and what not to do. This site has been a very valuable resource for me. If you prepare yourself for the things that might happen (predator-proofing, disease control & prevention, how to treat injuries), you don't feel quite as helpless if they do happen.

Then you remember that not everything is in your control.

My DH and I have built up our coop as strongly as we can, I have read as much as I can about things that may happen, and I take excellent care of my birds. I also have prepared myself for knowing that sometimes this isn't enough. Of course, this has been gained over a lifetime of owning pets and livestock.

I still bawled my eyes out when I had to put a chick to sleep. I know by now that I always will. Then, I concentrated on the ones still counting on my care.

Good luck with your chicks. I think you will do just fine.
