Good question, plus I have seen people post on an old thread because it is a good thread for info and ask if a poster (sometimes the opening poster) would elaborate on their comment I wish one could deactivate and it show up on the threads as deactivated and if one tries to pm the person it automatically replies the account has been deactivated.
I don't think it's possible to deactivate a BYC account. Most of the people on here just quit logging on. You might get a better response in the Feedback and Announcement section
I've seen this question show up on another forum, and I have to ask, why would you want to? Just stop logging in. Done. Or if you're worried about getting emails from this site, just turn off that option in your settings.
deleting accounts can screw with threads that the person has posted in because the person is no longer registered, this is why a lot of forums wont a low deregistering.
it doesnt make sense to deregister because have been a regular user, may want to come back at another point.
One might want to deactivate their account to make a point, officially "Quitting" instead just not being around. And simply deactivating would be so much simpler than trying go back and turn off every thread a person follows.
I agree about with just not signing on, although Oldrooster brings up a valid point.
Oh, and If you want to stop getting notifications to your email, since you'll no longer be logging on the site, Here's what to do:
Click on "subscriptions" up at the top, by your user name, then "Edit My Subscriptions". Scroll to the bottom, to where it says "Select", click on "ALL", then right next to that, where it says "with selected" choose either Delete or Set to Site Only (since you wont be logging on, it wont matter if you select this option)
We're always very sorry to hear when members want to leave our community. If they are having problems with other members, specifically if any are harassing them, please let us know as this is directly in violation of our rules which every member agreed to when joining the community. If there are other reasons why members are leaving we'd like to know so we can improve our site and find a way to make you feel comfortable. We want to make our community the best community in the world for all enthusiasts.
We unfortunately can't remove member's accounts. If they have personal information in some posts, and don't want their username publicly posted, we can do the following:
Change their username to something completely different
Edit any specific personal information they want removed from their posts.
Change the email address associated with the account to ensure no emails go from BYC to that account.
Block account access to ensure others can't login to the account
Again, we are sad to see anybody want to leave BYC and hope we can find a way to keep them here as active members
Nifty would it be possible to put it on a persons info on the left where the username photo etc. that someone is no longer active? seeing the above arguments from all above so that if someone leaves for whatever reason for however long (a few months to forever) people won't send PM's or post messages for someone there who is no longer active, a;so if they decide to come back for good they could fill out a simple form for opening/suspending the account for a moderator to make a few clicks and note the changes?
