How does one get into/started showing chickens?

I also wanted to say that some great birds come from hatcheries. When we had our buff laced polish we won many many best of class and got a reserve in show at an APA show with them and they came from McMurray.

The shine stuff is "Pinks." You can't miss it--the can is, in fact, a very bright shade of pink.

I also use the olive oil spray sheen in the big green can for my horse's tails. It gives moisture to the hair, not just shine (though it gives plenty of that) like ShowSheen. I love the stuff. I haven't tried the olive oil spray on the chickens--I don't know if it would be too greasy? Though the Pinks is an oil spray, too, and it dries light.

I too am interested in showing this year for the first time. I have gone to a few local shows just to watch, but this thread has answered a lot of questions.

However, I have another one about showing. It seems that all the breeds in the shows around here only have the standard color of each of the breeds. For instance I have seen on this sight some wonderful new colors, like Lavendar Silkies, etc. Can you show a new color of a breed, or will they be disqualified. I'm asking because I just recieved some hatching eggs for Blue Astrolorpes, and would like to work at breeding this color exclusively. But could I show them if they aren't the standard black color?

Thanks.

Yes, you enter them under the correct breed an d for variety list AOV (Any Other Variety) and name the specific variety using your example,

Australorp AOV Blue Hen (or Cock, Cockerel or Pullet, as appropriate)

They won't be able to place above other AOV birds of the breed, but if a new variety is ever to be recognised they have to be shown, and shown often, by a number of breeders.

Thanks for the information. But why couldn't thye place above other AOV birds of the breed? Especially as I have never seen anything but black astrolopes in this area?

Just wondering. And I really appreciate the knowledge you are passing along!

Since this is a thread about getting started in showing, I guess I have a question. The county fair where I live has livestock shows every year and I considered entering some of my birds in the poultry show this summer even tho they are hatchery birds. I figured that this might be okay since its a lil podunk county fair AND on the entry form they actually have Black Sex Link as a breed category so I am assuming it isn't an APA show. If I don't mind being embarrassed by my hatchery birds possibly sitting next to awesome birds think this would be an okay way to get a first glimpse into showing chickens and if it is something I decide I want to do just go about it the right way and get good SQ birds?
