Only recognised varieties can place as Best & Reserve of Breed, or higher--that's the rules.
If several AOV varieties are present, any of them can place as Best AOV. If you entered both blue and splash Australorps, and maybe someone entered mottled, each of these separate AOV varieties would be judged for Best and Reserve of Variety, and among all these unrecognised varieties one bird would be chosen as Best AOV and the second place as Reserve AOV.
Juwel, contact your fair and ask if it is an ABA/APA sanctioned show. You might also ask if there is a local poultry club--they will know the quality of birds typically entered.
