Our neighbor gave us her 4 yo hens and rooster. I think they are *at least* four years old. We've had them about a week and a half. They are picking at each other something fierce and we are working at keeping that at bay. I've got no pick on the ones that are being picked on and have been feeding a good layer with oyster shell and black sunflower seeds. We've been letting them out in the yard a little bit each day and they LOVE it. We had put one of the hens in isolation, but she had a fit yesterday when the others were let out, so we let her go as well.

I noticed an egg this afternoon. It wasn't laid in one of the nests, but they rarely get in those. The former owner says they never have. What do you think of this egg? I think these girls are on their last egg laying days...

I got one that was misshapen like that one time. I had a hen that was disrupted SEVERAL times while trying to lay an egg one day. We were working on the coop next to her, so the noise upset her and some of the other chickens kept bothering her. It seriously took her forever to lay an egg that day, but it was fine. The egg she laid the next day, however, was weird shaped with a leathery texture but a thin shell. After that everything went back to normal.

These hens were moved a week and a half ago and this is the first egg we have gotten. Plus, the hens are older, so I am going to wait it out and see what we get. I was pleasantly surprised to see this egg today. My guess is that this came from our fattest girl.

What do you think of the texture? I am going to see what it looks like inside once my dh comes home.

It looked ok. There were two blood spots and there were bubbles in the white. Not many, though. We got another egg this morning and it may or may not be from the same hen. It is shaped similarly, but the coloring is slightly different and it doesn't look as wrinkled on the outside.

  • Heres a little trick I use. Put the egg in water if it floats it could have been in there a long time or it is a bad egg and if it does not then it should be okay. the egg could be all different colors have little bumps but if you get the eggs everday they should be fine just remember to try the trick it works.good luck with rest of your eggs.Hope this helps.
