How dumb are they really???

/edit and they are pretty stupid. Just not about temperature. Put food out, then put a fence between them and the food. Most birds will try and go thru it, or over it, but not around the fence. Day after day. Some are smarter, and lead the others - but if anything breaks line of sight, they won't go around that way, and even the smart ones will return to trying over and thru. Eventually, they get it. Mostly. Sort of. Enough to follow the smarter birds.

Yeah most chickens are that way. I was shocked when my White Leghorns outta Meyer Hatchery (production line, no less; got them in an assortment) turned out to be the smartest chickens I've ever had. My spouse isn't really into chickens, but he loves watching those two girls hustle. Always grab the best treats when I drop some in the run (ie, the ones with the most protein). I clipped their wings cause they were flying out (just the two of 'em), they climbed the fence using their clipped wings for balance so I had to top the run with wire too. Ain't no fooling them...they keep on trotting around until they figure out how to get what they're after while the other cluckers do their back and forth at the fence edge.

Yes, even when they are much older, there is always a traffic jam in front of the fence, these 2 photos show they just can't figure out a way go into the run drink (even mama hen), untill the first chick found the way.

erm I'm human and I can't even see an obvious way on the picture. It's not like they are trained german sheperd dogs lol. Why not just give them more water instead of making them walk through a maze

Of course the photo can't tell everything. Mama hen and chicks originally stayed in the safer sub-run, and the photo is when they came out to start the integration process.

There are several water and food stations, they just more used to the ones in their run.
