How far from the wall should I put the roosts?

Keep the turkeys away from the chickens. The turkeys could end up with blackhead .

Height is always best for predators. In colorado I want their tails to touch the wall to preserve heat in the winter. That is also why I keep it so close to the roof.

Makes since. Different specifications for different needs. My chicken coop would be too small for more than 6-7 chickens if my girls had to spend their days inside. But its warm enough year round here that they free range all day every day, and I can keep 8-12 chickens comfortable in it at night. Clearly the specs change as the conditions change.

Roosts 18" from the wall = no poopy walls!
I wouldn't go less than that for standard size hens.
There are photos on my page if you would like to see my roost set-up,
I have never had to clean the wall.
