how far should the perch be from the nesting box

i have a 7' x 13' pen, should i just put the nest box and the roost area opposite each other?

I wouldn't think so. You just don't want the nesting boxes right beside the roost. Because they will start roosting in the boxes and that becomes a mess. Me personally (and everyone has their own opinion), I would just make sure that the nesting area is just the nesting area and the roosting area is just the roosting area. If you can make the birds understand that (by separating them), then it's really easy to keep them clean.

This is my nesting boxes. I took this picture standing in front of my chicken's roosting area.

This is the roosting area. I took this pictures standing beside my nesting boxes. They are about 8 feet apart (this works for me).

Good Luck,

Thanks!

I have it so I can close the door under the roost if it gets too cold an open it when it's a little warmer. In fact the picture above, I had the door closed because it was getting down into the 20's and I didn't what the wind whipping through the coop.
