We don't want to find out.... Easier to build a simple frame. A neighbor was telling me about their coop fire they had several years back (I know, not the same scenario and I wasn't there so....grain of salt). Birds on fire trying to fly away (straight to a neighboring corn field). Many birds were badly burned but still alive & very scared, which they had to try and catch & put down. They lost 70 out of 100. She was still surprised I don't have supplemental heat in the winter. If your bird would catch fire, what could he ignite in your shop as he's flapping around afraid? Better to be safe... Good luck.

I live in a very rural area, and frequently have HUGE fires ..... Controlled burns, and getting rid of branches and debris from 26 trees I just cut down.

I was worried about the same thing, and had the same thoughts of flaming chicken rockets, ☢ but I've found that the birds give the fires a wide berth when lit, but LOVE scratching and dust bathing in the ashes.

Even though they are probably smarter than I give them credit for, I do keep them away/confined when the fires are reduced to smoldering piles of hot coals.

Your situation is quite different, as the roo doesn't see the flames and smoke. and just feels the warmth.

Speaking from experience (scared chicken flew *directly* into the center of a small but very hot bonfire)

You are correct, their feathers singe very quickly but immediately go out. The result of this was that our chicken was partially bald on her underside. No chicken fireball.

Our chickens love to dustbathe in the ashes from our burn piles. Sometimes coals stay alive for days, and I've seen chickens jump up with an indignant squawk and run off to nurse a singed spot. I had a dog who used to love cuddling up to the fire to the point that her hairs would singe back from her front paws' toenails and her whiskers would get very curly at the tips.
