I have never raised quails before and would like to start. I want to build 6' long and 2' deep pen, but not sure how high does it need to be. I read that you don't want it too low, so they can mate. But some other posters said not too high or they'll attempt to jump and fly and kill themselves for hitting the ceiling. So what would be the ideal height?

I'll be raising mainly Coturnix.

Also, if I want to separate a section for breeding, say 1 roo and 3 hens, how much space will I need to section that out?

THANKS!

if you make about a foot high that is room for mating . but you can use what ever is hand for you quail are not picky . and a 2' x 2' pen should be plenty of room for 4 birds.

Make it as high as you want. I have heard of "death by boinking". I have bobs in a 6" tall pin. When my kids are in the yard and playing around the pens the birds get scared and fly up on the perches I have build for them at 5" height. They are very good fliers...

I have cots in a pen next to that one that is 4" tall and no matter what's happening out there they don't attempt to fly anywhere.

You should go with whatever feels right to you. If a grown bird breaks his neck for being dumb he probably deserves it :). Look at the bright side, quail for dinner :)

I have three pens one with bobs two with cots all about 16" high. They have worked well for me no problems.

I have seen quail bolt and brain themselves on the roof of a 12" tall pen, the result was a coturnix with a split scalp, I ended up having to put it down. My breeder cages are 14" tall, and by pens will be 36" tall, but I have kept them in 12" pens and other than a couple of incidents, they were fine.
