im building a coop for the 6 hens im getting and wondering how high of the ground the roost should be. i will have cochins and other large breeds that cant fly very well. Is it best to have one bar across one side of the coop or to use the steep ladder way with small roost stacked higher and higher? Their will be about 6 inches of wood chips for bedding

i think mine is 3-4 feet high. it is at an angle with 3 cross pieces. here is a pic, but its a little hard to tell

Our roost is about 3 feet high too. Our medium and small breeds fly right up to it. It helps to have enough room for them to spread their wings on the way up and down. For the larger breeds, I mounted a short "half" roost about 18" from the ground. They hop onto that, then up to the higher one.
