How high the fence??

I use the 2x4 welded. You still have to look at them going over or under, but 2x4 fencing will stop raccoons, possum, skunks, mink. dogs, foxes, bobcats and such larger predators from going through the fence. It will not stop mice, rats, snakes, or smaller weasels from going through. Nothing except electricity stops bears. 1x2 would not stop many of those either. Baby chicks can walk through 2x4 fencing until they are a few weeks old. I'm not sure how well 1x2 would work to keep baby chicks in.

Oh, good, this project is looking a wee bit less expensive. The chicks now are 4 wks. In another week or so, they'll go into a 1x2 area during the day until they are big enough to handle 2x4 spacing.
