Can anyone tell me if a chicken is standing on the ground and the wind is coming out of the west @ 6mph (just kidding about the wind, hee hee)

Anywhoodles... How high can a chicken fly if they really want to get outta the run?

Thanks,
Heather

It really depends on the breed. My easter eggers can make it over an 8 foot fence. My silkies can flutter up maybe a foot and a half. But my one little mix (silkie, polish, japanese, mille fleur) who looks mainly like a japanese with mille fleur coloring, has taken off across the yard and flown 60 feet or so in a straight line. i have no doubt she could make it to the top of a telephone pole.

So, what kind of chickens do you have, how high is their run, and how windy is it there?

I have full size breeds: 2 Delawares, an EE, and what I think to be 2 Barred Rock (spelling?) the run fence is 3.5' but my whole yard is surrounded by a 6' privacy fence.

My coop is done but I need to build a run for them. I like the idea of netting on the top, that's a money saver.

How high should I make it if I have netting or fencing on top? 4'? 6'?

Our delawares can barely make it up to about 4 feet. The 6 week old silver laced though have cleared about 6.

The older they get the heavier they're going to be especially obvious if they're heavy breeds. We have netting over the top of their run both for safety and just in case they learn to work together and mount an escape.

We made ours six feet so we can walk around in there without being hunched over. We're also trying to protect them from coyotes and dogs.
