Welcome to New England

Northern NV...usually triple digits in July. But so far not too bad. We started June at 100 degrees, then got cool and rainy. Now July has been a week or so in the 80's, next week into the lower 90's. And as my mom in the Midwest always reminds me..."YOURS is DRY heat..." Our nights have been in the 50-60 degree range which cools things off dramatically overnight. I guess it does beat hot AND humid at the same time.

I just provide several water buckets in the run so one is always in shade. And we have a tarp up for some shade as well. I did buy a used screen door for the shed. But I need to re-screen it and the weather just hasn't been hot enough to make that chore rise to the top of the list

Welcome to da great white nort', eh?

This week, at night, the temps have dropped into the 40s. Most days only reach the upper 70s. We usually get out first frost date end of August. Then again, we're down in a river valley where it is always colder at night.

I keep trying to explain to my mother why I can't grow watermelons and she just keeps suggesting the early maturing varieties. Watermelons need nights above 50 degrees!

Though the greater surrounding area is Zone 5, we are Zone 4.

The chickens are nice and active this summer, though I hope this winter won't be too hard on them.

Wow!!! I'm so sorry that anyone has lost chickens to the heat

I hate the heat and humidity.

I'm in Massachusetts and I have to say that while I am enjoying the nice cool summer that we are having, I am a little tired of the rain. I think it rained everyday in June and, so far, the majority of the days of July. A major storm passed though the state yesterday leaving large amounts of hail stones making it look as though winter has come. I'm still wearing my flannel P.J.'s to bed at night

Even on the hottest days, it hasn't been warmer than 21 C / 70 F in the shade, which is where the birds are. They seem to be happily drowsy in the warmth, rather than stressed. Late June saw several frosts, which killed unprotected tomatoes, squash, and beans; the potatoes didn't like it either. I grump about that, but I'd rather lose a couple of plants to frost than any chook to heat...I'm sorry to hear of your losses.

83 ish. and its cold here for july......
its not supposed to be less than 90 in the middle of july in southern michigan.
but i really cant complain. the nights are cool enuf to sleep comfy

Here in Micanopy, Florida, it's 73 degrees! Lovely! We had brutal heat in the end of June, but lately we've had rain, rain, rain and it is much cooler. Glad we filled the coop floor with sand during the brutal heat - it's damp from the rain blowing in, but at least there are no puddles.

We are just north of ya in Altus, OK. Horrible yesterday...111.... I have a mister in the coop, but it soaks the shavings so I only use it in the afternoons. Teeny freezer... no room for bottles. It's only God's grace that my hennies are hanging in there. My husband is a lineman and is wiped out. I only average about 4 hours a day outside, but it's enough. I read about these lucky folks in the 70's and I want to cry. I don't know what the differenece is, but this year is killing me.
