How important is yellow skin for your county fair?

On the other hand, remember it is just a fair. Not the end of the world on winning or loosing. It is a chance to show off what you produce. As a former FFA judge, I have seen folks think that a college education or the end of the world was at stake if you lost. It really depends on who is judging. Judges are supposed to judge based on breed conformation. But there is leeway in there to award point for charastics that that judge deems desirable. For instance, on a speckled sussex, your maybe allowed 10-40 % speckles(dont quote me) . One judge might like fewer though and another more. Nothing you can do about it. Just enjoy the competation, learn form other exhibitors and have fun and eat a corn dog or 3. Dont fret over the result.

Actually... I save my money to get the steak tips with onions and mushrooms. The younger kids get the corn dogs!

My view is this: if they don't win, that's just more chickens to enjoy at home!

Just thought I'd weigh in...

The Cornish Crosses that come from Townline Hatchery contain a lot of white-legged birds. Since you're in Michigan, I'm guessing that's where you bought your chicks. I would estimate that about 10%-20% of their chickens have white legs. I've never shown mine at the fair, so I don't know if/how it affects judging.

UncleHoot: Interesting... I ordered mine through the local Red & White, and I don't remember where they said they order from, but I'm pretty sure that's not the hatchery... doesn't sound familiar anyway. All of my cornish have orangey legs so far... I thought that was the color they all had? What does a white leg look like?
