How late is too late to hatch eggs? September hatches?

I have 2 batches of Silkie eggs in the incubator. 2 eggs are due to hatch next saturday. Then the other batch is going to hatch September 4th. Then I have another batch that will be shipped to me soon. So they should hatch the middle of september, or around there.

I most likely will have to have a heat lamp on them all winter. But I dont mind. I was wondering, what is the latest you have hatched chicks?

Here in NY it gets to 15-20 degrees during the winter, esp. at night.
Ive never hatched chicks this late.


Last year I had a broody Sebright go missing and she hatched 3 eggs around October 10th.

I kept a group in the basement one winter-don't remember when I hatched them- but I think it was October.I have had silkies hatch their own in February.I said I was done-but I think I will go to the incubator well one more time (unless my silkied serama pair decide to produce more eggs-I will set them no matter what! even sit on them myself if necessary)

I pretty much hatch all year. More last winter than I ever have before. I've got eggs in now and will be getting some more in about 3 weeks. As long as you have a draft free place with a heat lamp you should be good to go. I think they feather out quicker and better when the temps are cooler for them. I live in Kansas and we get cold temps and lots of windchill.

I will be keeping the in my garage. I will also put some plastic around the outside of the hardwire cloth cage to keep the heat in. Im also going to use two heat lamps, that way if one pops, they wont freeze.



My next hatch hatches next Saturday. I cant wait.

We are hatching our last for year right now for next springs layers. Our turkeys start laying around Christmas/ New Year so we always take a fall "break"

i was at a show in January and they had week old chicks for sale

i hatch and sell babies all year here in tx and it gets down in the 20 s

I sure hope not, I have a hen setting on top of the hill and I can't climb up to get to her, so guess I'll have some babies if something doesn't eat her or the babies.

It can get to -20F here in the winter and unless you have a heated building your not likely to get it above 0-10F in December so I'm ending my chicken hatching season with the ones that are pipping right now. After this I'm hatching button quail which will stay inside.
