How long after hatch . . .

are the chicks active? I had a chick hatch last night about 6:30pm. To my suprize, because it was only day 15 in the incubator. ( Must have come from a broody nest?) Anyway, it's in the brooder and I've heard it chirp, seen it drink water, but spends most of it's time in the corner by the light. Are they active after hatch or does it take some time to recover from hatching ?

It's working at being warm and is still living on what remains of the yolk in its system. Give it a day.

I would put a thermometer in the brooder and check your temps at the bottom where the chick is. After 24 hours it should get pretty spunky in between naps. Just make sure it's warm enough and has cooler spots to go to.
