how long after they start squating do they start laying

I have an Easter egger that is 5 months old, but has been squating for about 4 weeks now. No eggs. She shows all the signs, like going in the nest boxes a lot, and rolling sister's and Mom's eggs like she thinks they are important. She does the egg song for sister every time an agg is laid...but nada from her. doesn't look to me as iif she is any great hurry! Comments??

Are you sure she is squatting? That is awfully young to be squatting.

As for her singing the egg song - the alarm call for danger sounds like the egg song but with a higher intensity.

Oh yes I know a squat when I see one! Her Easter egger sister was squatting after her, and started laying at 4.5 months! Yes that is !ike 22 weeks, but these are hatchery Easter eggers we are talking about, and who knows their breeding! I just haven't seen sqatting so long without prodcing eggs. It seems odd. As to the egg song, it could be a little of both the egg song and alarm. Her sister is quite the anxious pacer (for up to an hour or so) when she lays each day. A bit of a drama queen. : )

FINALLY Ichigo laid today! She is 5 months and 7 days old. She laid a pastel olive green egg just on the bottom side of medium. I was beginning to wonder about that girl!

My NJH's have started squatting but no eggs yet, they seem so small to me to even be thinking about laying eggs. My BA laid her first egg 2 days ago and never squatted, still doesn't when I pet her back end. First eggs are so exciting, I can't wait until all my pullets start laying.

Well there is a story behind that. Each of my 3 chickens belongs to each of my 3 grandchildren. So each time one of their chickens comes into lay, they get the egg in the cup with a bow. Then they get their first 6 eggs in a 6er carton with their special chickens info on the label.

After that they get their 6ers with their label every once in a while. I just gave them a carton last night with two of their chickens picts. : ) Makes it fun!
