How long are eggs edible?

You girls and Guys need to Think before you write , Those who said If they Float , they are bad are correct !!! Do you have a rooster present ? If I had 10 eggs off a nest I would want put them under a setting HEN .... I have eggs in the Fridge that are good eating a month old !! After all , When are they AGE-Dated when they come your Store ? Not until they see the inside of the Transporter ! ! ! ....... ALAN B .

I believe it was sometime in the 70s before refrigeration was required in the U.S. before that it was common to keep eggs at room temp. In CA at least chilled eggs are given an expiration date of one month from date of lay. Ours seem to be fine longer than that, so I would think non-refrigerated eggs would certainly be good for a while--just float them.

I keep m ine on the counter For weeks. they are still good

All great advice so far, I'm glad that there is a water test. My dad keeps telling me to candle them and I keep telling him there's no use because they are brown and opaque and then he accused me of not knowing what candling was. Suffice it to say, it's fun arguing with my dad.

To answer one post, we have 8 chickens. And believe me we thought 10 eggs at one time was a lot too, but we honestly just figured it was similar to women who spend too much time around each other and their menses synch up. You know we figured one laid an egg and the others all started to pop them out as well.

And our 24 hour guess is iffy at best. The two smaller speckled eggs could have easily been missed in a nest check, and since we weren't expecting them to even start laying in a couple more weeks we could have missed some others as well.

Anyway, thank you guys for the information. I'm gonna go check to see if I have any floaters now.
