We just discovered a nest of about 18 eggs.

We are wondering if they could possibly be fertile. The hens have not been sitting on them much at all

We are also wondering if the eggs are ok to eat since they could be a month or more old. It has been pretty cold here (in CA) low 40s at night and mid 50's during the day.

Any insight to help us newbies would be great!

Thanks Joedie! Do you know if they could be fertile even if hens aren't sitting on the nest?

Water test them and then candle to see if they are fertile she may have been sitting and got up to get some food or something.

ETA: a hen sitting on the nest hes nothing to do with fertile eggs or not, if you got a rooster the eggs are more then likely fertile for sure

I am sure you will find all the info you will need here to help you along.
